Terms and conditions
The terms that apply when you use Ecobite and this website.
Ecobite is provided by Quanteco VZW, a Belgian nonprofit ("Ecobite", "we"), Geldenaaksebaan 227 / 3.01, 3001 Leuven, Belgium, VAT number BE 0792.389.436, RPR Leuven. These terms cover the Ecobite app and everything you can do in it. They also cover this website, ecobite.io. Questions about them: contact@ecobite.io.
1. General
1.1. By creating an account or using Ecobite, you agree to these terms. Our Privacy Policy explains how we use your personal data. If you don't agree to these terms, please don't use Ecobite.
1.2. We may change these terms when the law changes, when we add, change or remove features, or to keep Ecobite safe and working. We'll tell you about important changes in the app or by email at least 30 days before they apply. If you don't agree, you can delete your account before then. If you keep using Ecobite after that, the new terms apply to you.
2. Your account
2.1. You can create an account with your email address, a name and a password, or with Google. Some things, such as browsing recipes, work without an account.
2.2. Keep your details accurate and your password to yourself. You're responsible for what's done with your account.
2.3. You can stop using Ecobite at any time. You can delete your account and everything in it in My Account, Delete your account, or by emailing contact@ecobite.io. People who personalised or tracked one of your recipes keep their copy.
2.4. Ecobite is for people aged 13 and over, or the minimum age in your country if that is higher. If you're younger, ask a parent or guardian to create the account for you. About you (8.6) is for people aged 18 and over.
2.5. If you don't use your account for three years, we delete it and everything in it. We email you 30 days before, and logging in before then keeps it.
3. Ecobite's content
3.1. The app, its software, design and texts, and the information we provide in it, such as food data and footprint and nutrition ratings, belong to Ecobite or the people we license them from. What users add belongs to them (see section 4).
3.2. Without our written permission, you may not copy, change, reverse engineer, decompile or take apart the app, or copy or reuse Ecobite's content (3.1) other than through the app's own features, such as sharing a recipe.
3.3. You may not use robots, scrapers or other automated tools to collect content from Ecobite, such as recipes, profiles and food data, or use Ecobite's content or what users add to train or run artificial intelligence (AI) systems, without our written permission. This applies to the app and to the recipe and food pages of our website. We reserve these rights against text and data mining under EU copyright law, also in machine-readable form. Search engines may list the pages we open to them.
4. What you add
4.1. Recipes, photos, comments and anything else you add to Ecobite stay yours.
4.2. By adding them, you let Ecobite store, resize, show and share them in the app and in the links and previews people share from it, worldwide and free of charge, for as long as they're in the app. If you make a recipe public, other people can personalise it, which copies it into their own version, without its photos (copies made before October 2026 may include them). What you added stays yours in their version too, and their version stays if you delete yours.
4.3. You're responsible for what you add. Please only add your own photos and words, or ones you have permission to use. Photos and recipes found online, in cookbooks or on other sites usually belong to someone else, even when they're easy to copy. Personalising a public recipe in the app is fine (4.2).
4.4. Don't add anything that:
- is illegal, or breaks someone else's rights, such as their copyright
- is offensive, hateful, threatening or harassing
- is misleading about food safety or health, or puts people at risk
- shares someone's personal information without their permission
- is spam or advertising
5. Reporting something
5.1. If something on Ecobite is yours and is used without your permission, or shouldn't be here for another reason, tap Report on the recipe's page or the person's profile. You can also email contact@ecobite.io. You don't need an account for either.
5.2. So we can act on it, tell us where it is (a link to the recipe or profile), what's wrong with it and why, and how to reach you. Only report something if you believe in good faith that your report is accurate. The report form asks you to confirm this.
5.3. A person looks at every report, and we remove what breaks the law or these terms as quickly as we can. We don't use automated tools to decide. A name that breaks them is replaced; a profile photo or bio is removed. When we remove or change something, we email the person who added it what we did and why (unless it's spam), and they can reply if they think we got it wrong. We keep removed content for 6 months so we can put it back if we did, and email them when we do. After that, or sooner if the law requires it, it's deleted for good. We keep a short record of what was removed and why, without the content.
5.4. We may also remove content that breaks these terms without a report. We may remove the accounts of people who seriously or repeatedly break them, for example by adding other people's photos: they can't log in, and their profile, recipes and comments are hidden. As with content, we keep a removed account for 6 months in case we got it wrong, and then delete it for good.
6. Information in the app
6.1. The nutrition, allergen, health and environmental impact information in Ecobite is estimated from the ingredients and amounts entered and from general food data. It can be wrong or incomplete.
6.2. It isn't medical or dietary advice. If you have an allergy or a medical condition, always check the ingredients and labels yourself.
6.3. The daily targets worked out from About you (8.6) are general estimates for adults, not medical advice. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding or have a health condition, follow the advice of your doctor or midwife.
7. Liability
7.1. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our fault, for damage we cause on purpose or through gross negligence, or for failing to do what is essential to providing Ecobite. Nor do they take away any right the law gives you as a consumer.
7.2. Apart from that, Ecobite is free and provided as it is, and we're not liable for costs or damage caused by:
- interruptions, errors or problems with the internet, networks, software or hardware
- data that was entered or processed incorrectly
- defects in the app
- what users add to it
8. Your privacy
8.1. How we collect and use your personal data, and your rights over it, are set out in our Privacy Policy. The rest of this section is a summary of it: if the two differ, the Privacy Policy applies.
8.2. In My Account, Privacy settings, you choose whether other users can see your recipes, your tracked foods, your followers and who you follow, and whether they can find you in search. A recipe you make private is hidden from lists and search, but anyone with its link can still open it.
8.3. You can ask to see, correct, move or delete your personal data, limit or object to how we use it, or take back a consent you gave, by emailing contact@ecobite.io. If you think we're handling it unlawfully, you can complain to the Belgian Data Protection Authority (dataprotectionauthority.be).
8.4. To see how the app is used, we record the pages visited, the screen size and the approximate city (not the exact location), and who was logged in. We delete these records after 12 months, or sooner if you delete your account.
8.5. We email you about your own account whatever you choose: for example to reset your password, or when we remove something you added. Our newsletter, and our emails about new features and updates, only come if you asked for them. You choose which of these you get in My Account, Email preferences, and each of them has a link to unsubscribe.
8.6. About you is optional and for people aged 18 and over. If you fill it in (your year of birth, sex, height, weight and activity level, your goal, your own energy and protein targets if you set them, the supplements you take, whether you're pregnant or breastfeeding, and whether you have a health condition or take medication that affects what you eat), we save these details only after you tick that you agree, and use them only to work out your daily targets and suggest recipes. No other user can see them or the targets, whatever your Privacy settings. You can change or remove them in the app at any time; removing them deletes them. Our Privacy Policy (section 4) explains more.
8.7. Suggestions from Track, in Food preferences, is optional and starts switched off. If you tick it, we use the nutrition in the meals you track to suggest recipes with more of the nutrients you've been getting less of, and for nothing else. The suggestions are general, not medical advice. Unticking it stops it. Our Privacy Policy (section 4) explains more.
9. Law and contact
9.1. These terms are governed by Belgian law. If you're a consumer living in another EU country, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country.
9.2. For users and for authorities, including under the EU's Digital Services Act, our point of contact is contact@ecobite.io. You can write to us in English or Dutch.
